BUDDHISM,
BUDDHAS AND BODHISATTVAS: From
A.D. 67 Buddhism started to arrive in China from India along the Silk
Route, gaining a definite foothold in China by the 1st Century
A.D. The first Buddha was Siddhartha Gautama, known as Sakyamuni, the son
of a raja in Nepal, who chose to reject his privileged lifestyle and lived
as a hermit, gaining spiritual enlightenment under a bodhi (sacred fig)
tree. At first Chinese Buddhas were depicted as Indian Buddhas, but during
the Sui Dynasty (A.D.589-618) and the Tang dynasty (A.D 618-907) they
began to take on Chinese characteristics. Buddhism was actively imported
into China because the Chinese rulers were interested in it. Many
delegations of Chinese monks were sent to India on fact-finding missions.
The Chinese interpretation of Mahayana (‘The Great Vehicle’) Buddhism
was such that anyone could become a Buddha (this was unheard of in India
with its tight caste system) and thus allow the immortal soul to escape
from the relentless cycle of reincarnation by entering Nirvana. To become
a Buddha, people had to do good to others and love their neighbours and
avoid sin. There were some people who had followed this path and earned
their entry into Nirvana, yet who chose to hold back from entering Nirvana
because they wanted to help other people to reach this stage : these
people were bodhisattvas, the most famous of which in China is probably
Guan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy.
LAUGHING
BUDDHA
The laughing
Buddha is a well known symbol of happiness, wealth, kindness and innocent
contented joy. It is believed that by rubbing his belly, which is said to
contain much wealth, it will bring you good luck and prosperity.
Shoushan or
Imperial Stone is found in Fujian province in south China. For
over 1500 years, it has been prized for its fine carving qualities and
rich colours. These
affordable imitations are cast from a mix of powdered Shoushan stone and resin carvings.
GUAN
YIN ‘The Goddess of Mercy’ When Buddhism
arrived in China from India, the main Bodhisattva of the Mahayana School
of Buddhism, called Avalokitesava in Sanskrit, blended with a Chinese
goddess to become the very popular Chinese deity called Guan-Shi-Yin or
Guan-Yin. According to a
Chinese sutra, she has compassion for human
suffering and appears in many works of literatures as a benevolent
divinity. She is usually portrayed with regal
beauty, a fair complexion,
elegant eyebrows, graceful eyes, crimson lips, flowing garments (often
white). Guan Yin ‘the Goddess of Mercy’, is the most popular of all
bodhisattvas.

DRAGONS
The Chinese
dragon is a symbol of both China and the Chinese Emperors and has always
been considered differently from the dragons of European and Middle
Eastern mythology. Far from being fearsome creatures, they were believed
to be essentially benevolent and held by many to be lucky.
Dragons are often
depicted with a pearl, as each dragon was believed to hold a ‘pearl of
wisdom’.

or Imperial stone. They are found in Fujian province in South China. For over 1500 years, it has been prized for its fine carving qualities and

TEMPLE
LIONS ( DOG OF FOO )
Temple
lions statues appeared in China with the coming of Buddhism. They
symbolise defence and protection. The Lion is the symbol of majestic
strength, great courage and strength of character. Tradition sees these
lions as protectors of the building and the people within, as they can
frighten away wicked spirits and combat any evil that might try to cross
the threshold. When a temple lion is playing with a ball it is to signify
the pearl which symbolises blessings and protection against evil. The ball
also represents the sun, which is Yang. The female temple lion often has a
baby lion lying on its back under her paw.

The green dragon
of the East signifies protection for the home dweller. In Chinese
mythology the Dragon is well known and much respected as an emblem for
strength, goodness, courage and endurance. The Dragon is the protector of
the heavens. The White Tiger
of the West symbolises strength. The Dragon and the Tiger coexist and are
inseparable. It is perceived by the Chinese that the Tiger is one of the
best symbols of protection against evil intentions from strangers.
The Red Phoenix
of the South often depicted as the mate of the Celestial Dragon and used
in Feng Shui to activate the luck of opportunity. As you are out and about

disease, they were often worn by children ( one coin added each year until
the age of 15 ) after being first placed on a deity for blessing, i.e.

In Feng Shui

coins on red thread and place in the wealth sector, or place on accounts
